From Mr. Wright’s Introduction: These wills have been abstracted and compared to the original recorded wills at the courthouse in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Comparisons were also made to those copies done by Mrs. A. Watts in 1905. There were few errors noted-most of which related to the spelling of surnames. In addition to these corrections some additions in detail have been added.

Marriages and Deaths from The Carlisle Herald and Expositor (Carlisle, PA.) 1837-1844
Used. Paperback. Good Condition. Some Library Markings

From the Introduction, paragraphs 2 and 3: This book concentrates only on the marriages and deaths of the area from the obituary column, usually on page 3 or 4. These tended to be brief, giving only the bare facts. A few are quite lengthy and give much personal information about the deceased.
Nevertheless, it is hoped that this book will be of help to those searching for ancestors in Cumberland County. The Register of Wills has birth and death records from 1894-1905 and marriage records from 1885. Probate records are available from 1750. This book may help fill the gap before the county’s records began.

First Two Orphans Court Books (1825-Mid-1839)

From the Introduction: For the years covered in the first two Orphans Court Books (1804 to the middle of 1839), the northern part of Lawrence County is included, involving present-day townships of Plaingrove, Washington, Scott, Hickory, Neshannock, Wilmington, Mahoning, and Pulaski townships. Wilmington Twp, Mercer Co, borders Wilmington Twp Lawrence County, it should be noted. The 1810 Map applies with one exception. About 1832 (the year is somewhat controversial), Hickory Twp, Mercer County, was formed from the northern part of Shenango Twp and southern part of Pymatuning Twp. The researcher should keep in mind that both Lawrence and Mercer have Shenango, Hickory, and Wilmington townships. Sheango Twp, Lawrence County, even though bordering New Castle, was an Old Beaver County Township.

Wills of Chester County, Pennsylvania 1778-1800
Used. Paperback. Good Condition. Some Library Markings

From the Introduction, Paragraphs 1 & 2: The Wills of Chester County were first Abstracted by Jacob Martin of Marshallton, Pennsylvania and indexed by the indefatigable Gilbert Cope.
The abstracts done by Jacob Martin appear to be accurate and complete. Some minor corrections have been added. Recently it was noted by the Chester County Historical Society that the abstract of the will of James Whitaker was in error in what Martin had incorrectly given Whitaker’s son’s name as Edward Clayton which during mid 1700s would have suggested that Edward was a son-in-law and husband to daughter Ann Clayton. An examination of the original will showed Edward Whitaker to be the son of James Whitaker while daughter Ann Clayton is mentioned as having a husband, but unnamed. This error occurs in our earlier volume for the period, 1748. This volume was also checked against the original volume with only a few corrections noted. Nevertheless, the reader is cautioned that the original should be examined whenever possible. All wills covered by this volume are available on microfilm through Family history Centers (LDS).

Pennsylvania Births Chester County 1682-1800
Used. Hardcover. Good Condition. Some Library Notations

From the Preface: This volume, sixth in a series of “Pennsylvania Births,” has been prepared as an aid for genealogical research in the pre-1800 Protestant church records and Friends meeting records of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Surviving Chester County records reveal that the early population was predominantly Quaker. That is, eighty-six percent of recorded births and baptisms appearing in this text were found in the records for the Religious Society of Friends. The remaining records, covering only fourteen percent of recorded births and baptisms, were found in Presbyterian, German Reformed, and Lutheran church registers.

The Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James I
Used. Paperback. Good Condition.

Forward: by His Grace the Duke of Abercorn, H.M.L. President of the Ulster-Scot Historical Foundation: This volume is the third in the Foundation’s Historical Series. It is the work of an Ulsterman who is himself the descendant of seventeenth-century Scots settlers and who now teaches in McGill University in Canada. His own roots, combined with his academic detachment, make him a person ideally suited to present this account of settlement in seventeenth-century Ulster. He has drawn upon a wide range of sources both manuscript and printed and I feel that he has filled a notable gap in our knowledge and understanding of this period. Certainly the Foundation counts itself fortunate to be able to publish the results of Professor Perceval-Maxwell’s research.

Searching For Your Ancestors – Hard Cover
Used. Hardcover. With Dust Jacket. Good Condition. Published 1973, Second printing 1978.
This book is intended to be an introduction to the method of searching for elusive and forgotten ancestors. It has been written primarily for the individual who has always thought that he would look up the family tree, but never got around to it. The average person never does get around to it, mainly because they do not know where to start, and feel a bit sheepish, perhaps about asking a librarian for directions. This book is designed also for librarians of the public library in order that they may have something to put in the hands of patrons who have decided to look up their ancestors and come to them for advise.

Mayo has had an interesting social history and it’s families are a mixture of native families, of other Gaelic families who migrated to the county from Northern Ireland in the 18th century, and of English and Scots-Irish settlers who came to Mayo from the 17th century onward. It is one of the Irish counties which experienced a high level of emigration, both to North America, and also to Scotland and elsewhere in Britain. In comparison with most other Irish counties, Mayo has fewer records of value to family historians. This makes it important to use the existing records to their best advantage. This book sets out the records available for Mayo, where they can be accessed, and how they can be used to best effect in tracing Mayo families.

Passengers to America: A consolidation of Ship Passenger Lists from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register
NEW – 554 Paged, soft cover. With the publication in 1975 of Emigrants to Pennsylvannia, 1641-1819 – a consolidation of ship passenger list from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography – a pattern for further consolidations from periodicals literature would apper to have been established. reduced the labor of hunting about in a multi-volume periodicals in pursuit of obscure and elusive data…Purchase this book to read more about the Consolidation of Ship Passenger List form the New England Historical and Genealogical Register.

American Place Names of Long Ago
NEW – 347 Paged, Hard cover. Urban and surburban development probably has been the greatest cause of the disappearance of American place names of the past from present atlases, road maps, telephone directories, and new census tabulations. There have been other man-made causes also, such as flooding of land through the creation of reservoirs and lakes. Some deliberate name changes have been made without any attendant changes of landscape. Thus there are a variety of reasons why a place name that served its purpose well enough long ago may not be found in a modern finding tool. When one is looking for persons – one’s own ancestors or someone else’s – the story behind the disappearance of a place name is immaterial. Just finding where on a map that place was, in order to search for records, is the objective.

Quote for the Author:

With much encouragment from friends and family, I decided to make the diary accessible to all readers. I transcribed it in chronological order, reuniting all entries under the date they describe, and then set out to identify as many of the people named as possible. What began as a purely genealogical adventure turned into much more. To understand the diary it was necessary to explore the political and legal setting which Tillinghast wrote, the vocabulary of ship building and herbal medicine, and the mechanics of colonial craftmanship…..

Used. Excellent condition, hard cover book with 210 pages. Published by Gateway Press Inc., Baltimore, MD.

No work is perfect and this one is no exception, but documented information is sprinkled liberally throughout this book in an effort to seek out the facts. After all, an old family bible, with written data and family information consisting of names and dates passed down through the generations, is enough to make many people believe that it’s the gospel truth. And while that may be, but it is only in documenting the facts that the true story begins to unfold. This is one of the purposes of compiling a book about the Wartenbe’s.

Twenty Families of Color in Massachusetts 1742-1998
Used. Like New Condition. Hardcover with 524 Pages. Jacket border is the carved pattern of a wooden cup from the Congo-Kinshasa area in Africa. Generations of African Americans have fought against racial injustice and thus provided the historical context for the modern civil rights movement that most American incorrectly assume to be the beginning of the African-American struggle. Information about the families who sustained the struggle over the course of our national life is extremely difficult to unearth. Unfortunately, most American still believe that history is the province of the famous and powerful, and much of the most valuable documentation of the lives of African American has been discarded or remains hidden away in attics and basements, unavailable to scholars. That is the reason why this volume by Frank Dorman is valuable. For those who have yet to discover the marvelous information can be produced by the skilled and patient genealogist. This book provided material for the construction of African-American social history and for broadening our appreciation for and understanding of the history of African-American family and community life.

Baptismal and Marriage Registers of the Old Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster County, New York, 1660-1809
Used. Good condition, hard cover. 797 Pages, index cloth. (1891), reprinted in Baltimore in 1980. This is an extraordinary book, a transcription of the oldest extant Dutch Church registers in the country – extending a full 150 years and bearing reference to some 44,000 persons. The value of the Kingston Church Register cannot be overestimated. They embrace the names of many Dutchmen who first made their homes in New York or Albany, and a very large proportion of the Dutch families who immigrated to this country before the close of the 17th century are represented here, since for a long time the Kingston Church was the only ecclesiastical jurisdiction between New York and Albany and people from the vast territory in between came to the Church to be married and to have their children baptised.

Over the past seven years [first printing 1976], he has copied, alphabetically arranged andtyped the Falmouth Town Records, as well as the Bible records, church records and cemetery inscriptions of Falmouth. A comparison of his typescript with the Vital Records in The Genealogical Advertiser and among the abstracts my husband and I made from the Town records for the Samson Five Generations Project, convinced us of the accuracy of Colonel Brown’s work.
